The short version. Your writing is yours. It stays on your own device unless you choose to save it to your account, nobody else can read it, and you can download or delete it at any time. There are no adverts and no tracking.

Who we are

Begin is made by CHAG UK Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 14504551), with its registered office at Bollin House, Bollin Walk, Wilmslow, SK9 1DP. We are responsible for how your information is handled under UK data protection law. You can contact us at hello@writewithbegin.com.

Asking to join the beta

If you use the form to ask for a place in the beta, we receive your name, the email address you give and anything you add in the note. These are stored with our hosting provider, Cloudflare, along with when you sent them, and we’re sent an email to let us know, through an email service called Resend. To stop one connection sending lots of requests, we also keep a one-way code made from your IP address, which can’t be turned back into the address itself.

We use your details only to reply to you and, if you join, to give you access. To have them deleted, email us.

Signing in

While Begin is in testing, it’s only open to people we’ve invited. Sign-in is handled by Cloudflare Access: we add your email address to the list of testers, and Cloudflare emails you a one-time code when you sign in. Cloudflare keeps a record of sign-ins, including your email address, the time and your IP address.

Your writing

Everything you write in Begin is saved in your own web browser, on your own device. If you choose to save a story to your account, a copy is stored with our hosting provider, Cloudflare, linked to your sign-in email, so you can carry on from another device. Only you can open it.

You can download all your saved stories, or delete them from your account, at any time from inside Begin. If you’d rather we did it for you, email us.

AI suggestions

AI suggestions are optional, and only happen when you ask for them. When you do, the parts of your story needed for the suggestion are sent to Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI model, which returns the suggestion to you. Anthropic doesn’t use this to train its models, and keeps it only for a limited time under its own terms. We don’t keep a copy.

Reporting a problem

If you use Report a problem, we receive what you write and the details you choose to include, and use them only to fix the problem.

Adults only

Begin is for adults. Please don’t use it if you’re under 18.

This website

This website doesn’t use cookies, analytics or adverts. It’s hosted by Cloudflare, which keeps short-lived technical logs (such as IP addresses) to keep the site secure and working. The fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser connects to Google.

Your rights

You can ask what information we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing hello@writewithbegin.com. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes to this policy

If we change how Begin handles information, we’ll update this page and the date at the top before the change happens.
